Birkenstock has moved well beyond their "hippie" legacy from forty years ago. Many people have learned that this shoe brand represents quality, extreme comfort and a timeless shoe choice. Probably one of the oldest shoe designs still in production, Birkenstock has developed a following of wearers who are addicted to this healthy footwear.
Birkenstock's history began in 1774 in a small German village when Johann Adam Birkenstock, registered as "subject and shoemaker" in the church archives for that village, began to make this shoe. But, it was his grandson, Konrad Birkenstock, who developed the concept that would literally change the shape of footwear. Although the soles of our feet are curved, shoes had always been flat inside. Konrad theorized that if the shape of the shoes reflected the shape of the feet, greater comfort would be possible. Soon he designed the first shoe with a contoured insole to be used by shoemakers in the production of custom footwear.
Margot Fraser visited Germany over forty years ago and had the pleasure of wearing this shoe created by the Birkenstocks. In 1966, Fraser began to import the footwear from Germany, and the Birkenstock USA craze was born. The company now is 100-percent employee owned and it offers dozens of styles and colors in their footwear for men, women and children. Additionally, they use cork, latex and jute as some of the sustainable materials available in the footwear industry. There is little waste from their manufacturing process, which must comply with Germany's rigid standards for recycling and waste.
Additionally, these shoes also can last almost as long as a lifetime if you avoid extreme heat, apply cork sealant and renew or replace worn soles. If they don't last forever, you can find a local retailer who can help repair those shoes. This is good to know, as the toe room, raised toe bar, contoured footbed, deep heel cup, shock absorbing sole, and footbed liner are too comfortable to lose!

The strap adjustability is what salvaged these sandals for me - otherwise I would have been frustrated by the way the straps stretched or tightened, depending upon the length of wear or dampness. The sole, too, is fabulous. Very soft and conforms to your foot.

I have a small foot for a guy, and these sandals make my foot look larger. Outside the vanity, these Birkenstocks also are very comfortable, they provide great footing, and their good with socks, too. Easily adjustable straps, but if you keep them in the same place too long,t hey become hard to move.

I hated the first pair of Birkenstocks I owned, but a cousin sent a pai of these soft bed shoes to me for Christmas, and I really like them. They don't rub against my feet like that first pair. Very comfortable, soft and warm. I wear them around the house like slippers.

I bought a pair of the Birkenstock Granada sandals. I have to say I not get why women are so bonkers about the comfort of this brand.
